The island of Santorini

In the last five days I have been running around the Greek Islands. Starting in Athens to Piraeus>Mykonos>Kusasadasai(Turkey)>Patmos>Rhodes>Crete>Santorini>Piraeus>Athens. If there is heaven it is on the Greek Islands where you can see history, natural beauty and mythology collide. In Mykonos you can see windy streets and beautiful white buildings where pirates roamed. In Kusadasai Turkey, I visited the ancient city of Ephesus and saw how the Greeks used to live and roamed the streets and stadium/collesium where Antony and Cleopatra had marched down. In Patmos, I visited the grotto where the book of revelations was written. In Rhodes I see an ancient medieval city and the harbor that used to house the famous colossus. In Crete, I did research for my revisit with Laura and discovered that the capital city is kinda run down. But in Santorini, I climbed up a volcano, jumped into hotsprings from the side of a sailboat and climbed waaaaay down the side of the island on a donkey. I also learned that the ancient myth of Atlantis was based off the Minoans in Santorini and that the active volcano on the island exploded one day, sinking the heart of the island and killing off the culture that was on it. The minoans had advanced cities with perfect plumbing, a complex religious system, an organized government and the farming on the lands was supposedly very good due to the fertile volcanic soil. The theory has yet to be proven but it puts the puzzle pieces together. As I am a history dork and into mythology, hiking up the mountains and looking at all this history was very exciting. After we jumped into the ocean to swim to the hotsprings. Everybody coated themselves in layers of mud from the bottom of the brass colored water.

The sunset from Santorini. The volcano creates a microclimate in the area and the clouds/view was heartbreakingly beautiful. I give this island 12 stars (out of 10) in terms charm, history and beauty.
Volcanic island in Santorini. Everything was black, it smelled of sulfur and the ground was warm. It was a pretty amazing trip hiking up the hills.

Another view of Santorini. The island itself is very steep and when you enter the port its a straight cliff up to the town. The fertile volcanic soil allows farmers to grow grapes and make their own wine that is sweet and port-like.

The stadium in which Marc antony, Cleopatra, Elton John, Cher, and John the divine tried to prevent the people of ephesus from worshipping Artemis. With 10,000 seats, at one point the stadium was filled with people shouting, Great is Artemis, our only goddess and the Christian apostle was driven from island.
